Choc Strawberry Milkshake

Smoothies are a great way to fill your kids quickly while packing in fruits and vegetables into this awesome portable snack.

This Choc Strawberry Smoothie plays on the traditional chocolate milkshake by adding in the goodness of raw cacao and strawberries without being full of additives or refined sugars! Throwing in some greens also enhances the nutrient profile of this snack.

In most flavoured milks, the second ingredient is sugar. In Woolworths Kids Chocolate Flavoured Milk there is 14.5g of sugar (about 3.6 tsp) per 250mL serve. In Devondale Moo Chocolate Milk there is 18g (about 4.5 tsp) of sugar per 200mL serve. These are both marketed to children.

Generally, the guide is for children under 2 years old they shouldn’t consume any added sugar. As children get older, the upper limit added sugar recommendation varies from 3-6 teaspoons per day. In these flavoured milk drinks alone, children are consuming their upper limit.

It’s very easy for sugar to sneak up into snacks and meals throughout the day. Cutting out some of these discretionary food items and replacing them with a whole food alternative is a positive step to a more balanced diet for your child.
